What is a TMJ disorder?

TMJ disorders are conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is the joint connecting your lower jaw to your head. Also known as TMD, this condition occurs when the jaw joint is stressed, injured or misaligned. Common signs of TMJ disorders include:

  • A locked or stuck jaw
  • An inability to open your mouth widely
  • Frequent headaches and migraines
  • Grinding, clicking or popping sounds when your jaw moves
  • Pain in the neck, shoulders and ears
  • Pain when chewing and biting
